12 Steps to Conquering Laziness

Laziness is no stranger to any of us. We’ve all experienced it at one time or another, whether it was only for one Sunday 5 years ago, that vacation to the Caribbean last summer, or a recurring theme in your everyday life. I’ve experienced my fair share of it and had to learn some serious self-discipline to conquer it. I’ll be honest with you, at the end of the day, it’s about discipline. You really have to just do it and you have to want to do it.

There isn’t any sort of magic cure to laziness, it’s simply just getting off the couch/out of bed and doing what needs to be done. That being said, I believe the steps below provide a helpful guide on how to get started. They certainly helped me and insha’Allah, I hope you will find them useful as well. Before we get started, I want to address the miscorrelation between laziness and illness, mental or physical.

A lot of us are beating ourselves up for what we perceive as laziness but is, in actuality, an undiagnosed health issue. Common symptoms of depression, iron deficiency, hypothyroidism or even a food sensitivity can easily be mistaken for being extremely tired or feeling lazy.

I am not encouraging anyone to self-diagnose, instead, if you feel like you are experiencing a lethargy that won’t go away and/or lack of interest in the things and people around you, please see a doctor for answers. With that being said, if all is well health wise let’s get into some simple tips and tricks to get out that lazy slump!

 1. Sleep


First and foremost, get the proper amount of sleep! Studies show that on average, 8 hours of sleep is ideal for most people. I most certainly agree that this number can change on an individual basis. If your body simply does not want to sleep any longer than 6 or 7 hours, so be it. You have to listen to what your body is telling you.

Dedicate one week to catching an early night (if your life and/or job allows) and commit to waking up at the same time every morning for consistency. You may find yourself struggling for the first few nights as you break the night owl habit, but in a couple of days your body will adjust and you may find that it does just the trick.

Getting enough sleep is key for your body to rejuvenate and to provide you with the energy you need for a productive day. Please don’t pay attention to anyone who tries to tell you that going without sleep is admirable or beneficial. It’s not and this type of lifestyle will quickly result in burnout. 

2. Start your day off right

Wake up as soon as the alarm goes off for fajr and don’t go back to sleep afterward. Don’t even sit back down on your bed. Make your bed and then get your day started. Personally, I love working out first thing in the morning because that rush of endorphins gives me the energy I need to accomplish everything I set out to do for the day.

I also love the rewarding feeling of accomplishing something so early on in my day and the lack of stress that comes with putting something off. Make sure you eat a full, nutritionally dense breakfast, one that will give you more energy not drain you. This is why I prefer plant-based breakfasts because the body doesn’t require as much energy to digest fruits and vegetables which means no mid-morning slump!


3. Put on regular clothes

No lounging around in pjs. Dress for success, even if you have nowhere to be. This puts you in the mindset to get things done.

 4. Make a to-do list for each day

Treat yourself once you’ve accomplished everything. This can help sort out overwhelming tasks into baby steps that won’t seem quite so stressful. Oftentimes, stress can cause us to procrastinate, pretending that the problem doesn’t exist.


5. Remove entertainment and social media apps from your phone

Try keeping track of how much time you spend on these distractions every day. You would be surprised by how relieving and peaceful getting rid of these can be, or at least putting them out of reach. There are also apps for blocking the use of these platforms for however much time you decide. For the first few days, you’ll feel rather strange and may not know what to do with yourself. But I’ve found that this feeling goes away within a couple of days and is replaced by an insatiable hunger for movement, creativity, and real face-to-face experiences.


6. Set up a schedule for your day

Have a strict morning routine, dedicate a few hours to personal/creative projects, a few hours to run errands and do chores, the hours that you go to work, a few hours to yourself for any hobby you may have, a few hours for self-care, etc.


7. Spend time on self-care

Take care of your skin, your hair, your body. Treat yourself to this moment where you genuinely take care of yourself and do what’s best for your mental and physical health. You will see results over time, which can boost your confidence which can, in turn, boost your desire for productivity.

8. Keep your living space organized and efficient

A clean put together living environment can lessen your draw towards a sluggish day on the couch in an attempt to avoid confronting the mess. Also, try putting things away right after you’re finished with them so that you no longer have to worry about clutter accumulating.

9. Have bills set up for auto draft

This can be so convenient and save your credit score f you find that you can’t be bothered with the process of logging on to each website to pay for them every month or if you’re like me and forget.


10. Cut toxic, selfish people out of your life

There are people who will drain your energy like nothing else and present a negative influence. Surround yourself with people who are active, compassionate, loyal, supportive, hardworking, and ambitious. Remember, we are the sum of the 5 closest people to us.


11. Take care of unfinished business

File paperwork, finish taxes, organize files, clean out the garage/closet/any other storage space, declutter, etc. Anything that needs doing, go ahead and knock it out. This will not only allow you to accomplish something but also take away the stress of thinking about it and how much you need to do it.

 12. Pray the 5 daily prayers on time

Be diligent with your prayers. When you see that the time has come to pray, with no excuses or questions, get up and pray. I noticed that my life changed completely when I committed to praying on time (I’m still working on it). We are commanded to pray 5 times a day, that is the bare minimum. But how are we praying?

If we rush to pray with the intention of dedicating ourselves wholefully to that prayer, if we resist distraction and pray with everything in us, if we take our time and savor that moment, and if we make dua afterward that Allah (SWT) will guide us and make us productive, then we will see results that we can hardly comprehend insha’Allah. For me, the discipline of prayer allowed me to develop a discipline in so many other areas of my life, Alhamdulillah.

And to close everything out I’ll say this: you have 24 hours in a day. No matter what you choose to do with it, the day will end in 24 hours. So you can spend those waking moments accomplishing things that will put you ahead at the end of the day or you can do nothing and finish out the day with nothing to show for yourself. Your call.

Think about what value you are getting for your time. For example, going to college for a bachelor’s degree will take 4 years and may sound tedious. But if you don’t get your degree, where will you be in 4 years? Still broke? Still in a crappy, dead-end job? Not making the money you want to be making? 4 years go by quickly and in the long run, is not that much time to sacrifice to a worthy cause.

Whereas, if you spend that 4 years binging Netflix, blowing your money on online shopping, hating your job, etc. you end up feeling like you’ve massively wasted your time. Put a vivid mental picture in your head about the consequences of not taking charge of your life now. If you neglect your skincare routine, how are you going to look in a few years? If you don’t exercise and eat healthy, what health concerns may you face? If you don’t go to class, what amazing opportunities and life experiences may you miss?
